Cleveland Jimerson

Cleveland Jimerson, 91 of 923 Maple Ave., was born, May 17, 1925 in Salisbury, North Carolina to the late Alma Sharpe Jimerson and Edward McCluney.  He was also raised by his step-mother, the late Odell McCluney and was educated in the schools of Rowan County.  He departed this life on, Tuesday, January 10, 2017 after several years of declining health.

He was a WWII Veteran and retired from Norfolk & Southern Railroad with over 45 years of service.  He was the first African-American to serve on the East Spencer, NC police force.  He was a member of Shady Grove Baptist Church in East Spencer, NC, where he served as former President of the Senior Choir for over 25 years and former President of the kitchen committee.  He was also a member of the JC Price American Legion Post 107.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, the former Barbara Bailey Jimerson, sons, Charles Jimerson and Arthur Jemerson, grandson, Reginald Jimerson, Jr., brothers; James Jimmerson, Arthur Jemerson and sisters, Johnnie Mae Zimmerman and Alma Kathleen Taylor.

He is survived by his children; Margaret Donaldson (James), Salisbury, NC, Reginald Jimerson (Dorothy), Inman, SC, Janice Mitchell, Linda Vincent (Reginald) and granddaughter raised as a daughter, Arlette Scott Oglesby, all of Salisbury, NC; brothers, Edward McCluney, Jr., (Laura), Washington, DC, Charles McCluney, Sr., (Linda) & John Ashton McCluney of Norfolk, VA; sisters, Mattie Baynard (Norman), Scarlet Parson, Constance Berry, Marjorie Diane Allen (John), of Norfolk, VA, Rose Denise Dykeman, Virginia Beach, VA, Rev. Ethel Judith Copeland, Springfield, NJ and Rev. Paulette McCluney, Petersburg, VA.  He is also survivied by 13 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, 4 great-great grandchildren, daughter-n-laws, Edna Jemerson, Salisbury, NC,and  Doris Jimerson, Mocksville, NC; sister-in-laws, Ruth Gilmore (Leon), Harrisburg, NC and Sheila Bailey, Salisbuty, NC and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.  Special caretakers, Cathy Beatty, China Grove, NC and Delphia Cline, Salisbury, NC.

Visitation: 12:00 p.m.-Funeral 12:30 p.m., Thursday, January 19, 2017, Shady Grove Baptist Church, East Spencer, NC.  Burial will be held on, Friday, January 20, 2017 at 9:00 a.m., at the US National Cemetery with full military honors.
