Corrine Owens Lee

May 23, 1929 ~ May 19, 2016 (age 86) 86 Years Old


On Thursday, May 19, 2016, Mrs. Corrine O.Lee transitioned from earth to glory to be with the Lord at the Brian Health Rehabilitation Center of Salisbury, NC.  Mrs. Corrine O. Lee was born, May 23, 1929 to the late Mr. Vanderbilt Sr., and Mrs. Maryland Poe Morton.  She was born in High Point, NC, and was one of 7 sibling.  She attended Heiligtown School in Rowan County, and furthered her education with a 4 year degree in Early Childhood Education at N.Y. University.  She helped integrate the first daycare center on Lennox Ave., New York City.

Corrine relocated in Lumberton, N.C., were she and Mr. Leroy Chisholm, Jr., gave birth to their only daughter, "Peggy".  In 1952, she married Mr. Lawrence Lee and made the community of "Dixonville" their home. 

In the early 90's, she began attending Southern City Tabernacle A.M.E. Zion Church with her "Liftetime Sister", Mrs. Francis Rivers Anderson. East Spencer became her home for over 30 years, where she raised 4 generations and helped with numerous other children in which she was known as, "mama Corrine".  She rejoined her home church, Jerusalem Baptist Church.

Those who will always cherish her memories are her daughter, Peggy O. Ellis (William), sister's, Mrs. Juanita Rogers of Baltimore, MD., and Peggy (Ray) Lothrop, of Lexington, NC., brother, Jimmy Owens of Salisbury, NC, and a "special brother-in-law, David Martin of Fayetteville, N.C.

Deceased sibling: Edward, William, Vanderbilt, III, Bernard & Bernice.

Grandchildren: Teresa Crosby (Joe), Angela O. Watson (Willie), Ervin Owens (Otila), and Harvey Dukes.  "Special" daughter-in-law, Irene; Great-grandchildren:  Leonard, Shavesha, Machia, Chloe, Brandi, Chanel, Caleb, Ladelphia, Nia, Nicloi, and Quintin, "special" granddaughter, Lanesha; 19 great-great-grandchldren, and 1 great-great-great-grandchild, "Aubrey"; a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins; god children; Nancy, Bae-Bae, Aurelia, Althea, Ava, Adriane, George, Martha, and Robert (Baeslade).

Special friends; Mrs. Bessie McGee, Ms. Bernice Jones, David Jordan, James White, and Mrs. Tammy Brown.

The family would like to acknowledge: Dr. Chet Amin & the Staff of Family Piedmont Medicine of Salisbury, NC, 40 plus years of "loving care"; Brian Rehabilitation Health Center of Salisbury, N.C., "special nurses", Lydia, Alisha, Chasity, Victoria, Auyanna, Jennifer, and Margie, and The Glenn A. Kiser Hospice House.

Service:  Tuesday, May 24, 2016; Visitation beginning at 1:30 p.m., funeral at 2:00 p.m., at Jerusalem Baptist Church, Spencer, NC; Rev. Dr. David L. Bracken, pastor, officiating.
