James Robert (Pete) Sherrill, Sr., age 91 was born on November 1, 1925 to the late Otha & Mary Cherry Sherrill, stepmother Estelle Sherrill. He received his heavenly wings on April 25, 2017 at Genesis Health Care Center of Salisbury.

James was formally educated in Rowan County Schools.

He began his professional career as a farmer before moving to Cone Mills where he retired in 1990. He was the manager of The Spiritual Sherrillettes from 1960 -1998. James played baseball in the Negro League. He was also employed by O.O. Rufty, White Packing Company, RITA Transportation, and First United Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years Mary Sifford Sherrill, two daughters Betty Sherrill Millner, Rosemary Sherrill Brown, and a son James Robert (Duke) Sherrill, Jr.

Left to cherish his memories are his beloved daughters Barbara Sherrill Moore, Patricia Sherrill Swann of Salisbury,and Linda Sherrill Parker (Elder Ernest) of Cleveland, NC; 10 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren, 10 great-great grandchildren,and a host of nieces, nephews,and friends.

Services will be held Sunday April 30, 2017 at Trinity Presbyterian Church on Caldwell Street with visitation at 2pm and funeral at 3pm. Interment will follow at Mt Zion Baptist Church Cemetery, Boyden Quarters, Mt. Ulla, NC.
