Joyce Blackwell

Joyce Blackwell of Salisbury, NC passed away December 26, 2023 after a long battle with cancer. She was born September 18, 1978 in Heredia, Costa Rica to Vilma Aracelly Arias Sequeira and the late Adiel Chacon Zuniga. She was a member of Salisbury South Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses. Although cancer caused her to face many challenges, her faith always remained grounded. She frequently reassured herself of future Bible promises by referencing scriptures, such as Psalm 125:1, “Those who trust in Jehovah are like Mount Zion which cannot be shaken but endures forever.” Joyce will forever be remembered for her strength. 

Joyce provided companionship as a partner not only in marriage, but also in business, as an entrepreneur of several businesses servicing Salisbury and surrounding areas. One of the things that brought Joyce the most joy was traveling the world with her husband. She loved to explore and was always up for a chance to try new things. If it involved music, dancing or adventure, she was sure to have a good time. Over the years, Joyce developed a strong affection for the show F.R.I.E.N.D.S. It brought her countless laughs, normalcy and peace on rough days. She was creative and always shined through her designs, whether it was candle making, painting, or interior design. Joyce enjoyed spending time with loved ones. Those who she loved, she loved hard, intentionally, and unconditionally.

Joyce is survived by her loving husband of eight years, Shawn L. Blackwell. Those left to cherish her memory are her daughters, Shawn Z. Blackwell of the home; Tamara Gilbreath of Charlotte; Camilla Rodriguez of Charlotte; Karmyn Bullock (Ajonte) of Maryland; Kyra Blackwell of Lexington; son, Nicolas Blackwell of Charlotte; grandson, Koa Blackwell of Lexington; sisters, Arelys Chacon Arias and Valeria Chacon of Costa Rica; brothers, Jonathan Adiel Chacon and Josue Chacon of Costa Rica. She was privileged with having a loving extended family through her father-in-law, Harvey Blackwell; sister-in-law, Mya Blackwell; and brother-in-law, Eric Blackwell (Rhonda); nieces, Emre Blackwell, Eret Blackwell, and Sara Prendergast; nephews, Samuel Prendergast and Shaul Prendergast. She was loved by a host of devoted aunts, uncles, cousins and close friends. 

She remained thankful for the support of her brothers and sisters in faith, doctors, and nurses throughout her five year fight. 

Memorial Services will take place Saturday, December 30, 2023 at 2:00 PM at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses located at 3411 Old Concord Rd. Salisbury, NC 28146. Those unable to attend in person may use Zoom credentials to attend virtually.  It will also be lived streamed on the funeral homes face book page-Hairston Funeral Home, Salisbury, North Carolina..
