Tommy H. Hairston, Sr., is a life long resident of Rowan County and the "Five Row" community. He is a graduate of North Rowan High School and Fayetteville Technical Community College, having earned an Associates Degree in Funeral Service and Embalming.  He is the husband of Velveeta Reid-Hairston. 

Tommy is President of Hairston Funeral Home, Inc., and a life long member of Jerusalem Baptist Church, located in Spencer, NC, where he is a Deacon, Usher and member of the Men's Choir. 

His community affiliations include a member of the Rowan-Davie Deacon's Alliance; member and has served as 2nd Vice President as well as a past President of the Salisbury Branch of the NAACP; past member of the Salisbury Planning Board; a member and past board member of the Funeral Directors & Morticians Association of NC and the National Funeral Directors & Morticians; President of the Salisbury Rowan Branch of the National Hairston Clan; and numerous other organizations; having received many awards and recognitions including Professional of the Year in several organizations. Along with his wife, Velveeta, Aunt, Emma A. Hunter and Uncle, Bernard Hunter, he was instrumental in organizing the Hairston Funeral Home Honor/Scholarship  Project.

Tommy is an experienced funeral home director and embalmer and takes pride in the work he does with  families.  His caring and sharing skills equips him for being the community servant that he is.

He continues to be very active in funeral service and serves as a mentor to new staff.  He is available at the funeral home on a daily basis.

Hairston Funeral Home, Inc., is pleased to announce the addition to its managerial staff, Mrs. Juanita Miller, Licensee/Funeral Director.  Mrs. Miller is a resident of Rockwell, NC.  She started her funeral service career in 1980 as a secretary at one of the oldest funeral homes in Winston-Salem, NC.

 

She received her credentials in funeral service directing from Fayetteville

Technical Community College and also holds an AAS degree in Human Resource Management.  She is an Ordained Elder alongside her husband, Bishop Donnell Miller of New Calvary Ministries.  They are the proud parent's of seven children and nine grandchildren.

 

She has been a licensed funeral director in the state of North Carolina since 1994.  She has worked in many capacities of funeral service including, Funeral Director,  Licensed Cemeterian, Life Insurance Broker, and a Workshop & Seminar Presenter on the necessity of pre-need planning.  In 1997, she started her own Pre-Need Consultant Firm, (Miller's Exceptional Services/Merchandise) the first of its kind in North Carolina.

 

Mrs. Miller's philosophy in the business of funeral service is, "People don't

care how much you know until they know how much you care".

Mrs. Velveeta Reid-Hairston is a native of Eastern North Carolina.  She is the wife of Tommy H. Hairston, Sr. Parent's to four adult children, and 4 grandchildren. 

In addition to being the funeral home Office Manager and Community Programs Coordinator, she is employed as a Social Worker with the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services.  Velveeta along with her husband, Aunt, & Uncle, Emma and Bernard Hunter helped developed the Hairston Funeral Home Honors/Scholarship Project. 

Velveeta holds a B.S. degree from Livingstone College and a Master of Social Work degree (Clinical Track) from Norfolk State University. She holds NC Department of Public Instruction licensure as a School Social Worker, and Physical Education teacher, grades K-12 and is a Certified Clinical Sex Offender Treatment Specialist.  

Mrs. Hairston is a member of Mt. Lebanon A.M.E. Zion Church, Albemarle Conference, Elizabeth City, North Carolina.

She is a member of  Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., the Winston-Salem Alumni Association and National Alumni Association of Livingstone College and the local Rowan/Salisbury Chapter of the NAACP. She was crowned Ms. Alumni of Livingstone College in November 2013. 

Velveeta is also available to provide bereavement counseling to families in the Rowan/Salisbury area.

Emma Archie Hunter is a native of Rowan County. She comes to the firm as Clerical Support. She is the wife of Bernard Hunter and the proud mother of Cassandra Walker, RN, New York City, NY and grandmother of Preston Wallace, III (musician). 

She attended Livingstone College and retired from Rowan Hospital as a Registered Nurse. She is an active member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., and a member of Gethsemane Baptist Church, where she serves in the nursing ministry, missionary ministry and greeter ministry. 

Emma is also a member of the National Hairston Clan and the Hairston Funeral Home Honors/Scholarship Project.


James Milton

Rev. James E. Milton, II is a native of Rowan County currently residing in Spencer, NC with his family. Rev. Milton is the pastor of Pleasant Grove A.M.E. Zion Church in Concord, NC. 

Rev Milton attended Livingstone College and Hood Theological Seminary. He is a former police chief of the town of East Spencer, NC, and established the first campus police at Livingstone College in 1994.  

Presently, he serves as the director of campus safety and security at Hood Theological Seminary, Salisbury, NC. Rev. Milton has been in the gospel ministry since 1984 and has served the Rowan County community in both law enforcement and ministerial capacities for more than 25 years.

George L. Tillman comes to the firm as a licensed funeral director and embalmer. He completed his apprenticeship with Lamb Funeral Home in Concord, NC. , and completed Fayetteville Technical community college in 2002. He is the son of Mr. & Mrs. George and Susan Tillman. George is married and has one son and one daughter.  

He served in the United States Marine Corps for two years and served 12 years in the United States Army Reserves . He received an associate degree in Arts from Excelsior College in New York in 1974. 

George looks forward to providing quality service to the families in our community.

Walter Sifford comes to the firm as a business owner.  

He was born in Rowan County and currently resides in Granite Quarry, NC. 

He has two sons, Travis and Quentin, whom assist him in the landscaping business.

Eric has lived in the Rowan County area for a number of years. He is a member of New Bethel Baptist Church, where he is a member of the male chorus.  He works as a funeral attendant for several firms in the area.

Mr. Jonathan Thomas, from Concord, NC comes to the firm with years of funeral service experience.  He is a licensed, ordained minister and holds a BS degree in Religion and a Masters in Religion and also holds doctorate of religion degree from Tri County Bible Seminary, Maxton, NC.  

He is the son of Mr. & Mrs. James H. Thomas. Originally from Montgomery County, he graduated from West Montgomery High School.

He is married to Mrs. Fannie S. Thomas and are the proud parents of three daughter's and one son.  And, grandfather of seven.

He is a member of Sandridge Missionary Baptist Church in Maxton, NC.

Tommy H. Hairston, Jr., has many years experience in the funeral home business as a funeral attendant. He is a graduate of Salisbury High School in Salisbury, NC. He assist with the funeral home as his time permits.

He is the father of one daughter, Shyasia and one son, Ja'Mir.
