Barbara Robinson Obituary

On September 15, 2023, at 10:15 am, our Heavenly Father visited and called our beloved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend home. Barbara Jean Robinson, daughter of the late Rev. Charlie and Mattie Stevens, was born on June 4, 1937, in Spartanburg, South Carolina. After graduating from Carter High School, in 1960, Barbara moved to Washington, D.C. There, she met and married in Spartanburg, S.C. and James Robinson Jr.   James served in the Air Force during the Korean War. After his tour they settled in D.C and were blessed with a daughter, Olivia Francine Robinson.  She loved politics and was very involved in her community helping to get policies passed.

She worked for Washington Hospital Center, holding several positions in the Laundry Dept. She was employed by the Dept of Agriculture, Washington D.C., and the Dept of Navy as an Accounting Audit Specialist, for 36 years. She investigated EEO issues regarding discrimination grievances. Always looking out for resolution to problems.

She received awards as an outstanding and dedicated Staff member.   Retired, she worked for Prince Georges County Schools as a Substitute Teacher for 5 yrs. She later helped her daughter, Olivia. She worked at Livia’s Family Daycare for over 14 yrs.  She loved working with the babies/toddlers.  

In 1993, Barbara joined the honorable Eastern Star, Mara Grand Chapter of Washington D.C..  She became Grand Worthy Matron for the Order of the Eastern Star jurisdiction in Washington D.C. They were very supportive of Youth programs. She helped with group activity events, Plays/Concerts, and Choir Rehearsals. The Eastern Star conducted many impressive Food drives in support of the Community. A church member she attended New Southern Rock Baptist Church for over thirty years.

She leaves behind her loving and devoted daughter, Olivia Statom, and husband William Statom. One granddaughter, Andrea Robinson, and five great-grandchildren. Donald Robinson (Deceased 2013), DeAndre Robinson, Theoplis Harvey, Imani Harvey, and Aaliyah Harvey.  One great-great-granddaughter, Dior Robinson. One sister, Priscilla Mack and husband, Greg Mack. One brother, Charlie Stevens Jr., and wife, Sister-in-Law Yvonne Stevens. A host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends remain.  She was always helping those around her. Always caring for others.  She will be missed.

Service will be held at 9:00 a.m. on, Thursday, September 28, 2023 at Hairston Funeral Home, Inc., 703 S. Main St., Salisbury, NC.  Burial will follow at the US National Cemetery.
