Dr. David Lee Shinholster, age 76, died Saturday, July 14, 2007 in Jefferson City, MO. Born April 1, 1931 Dr. Shinholster was a native of Concord, NC and was the son of Alberta Shinholster.

Dr. Shinholster graduated from Logan High school in 1950. He served in the US Army from 1951 to 1953 with the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg. After an honorable discharge, he enrolled at Livingstone College in 1954 and graduated Cum Laude in 1957 with a BS Degree in Biology.

Following graduation, Dr. Shinholster worked at two North Carolina High Schools as a teacher of Science and Mathematics, Basketball Coach and Senior Class Advisor from 1962 to 1969. During 1963 to 1964, Dr. Shinholster earned a MS Degree in Molecular Biology at the University of Pennsylvania and then returned to Livingstone College to serve as Instructor and Assistant Professor of Biology for five years.

From 1970 to 1974, he earned a Ph. D. Degree in Medical Insect Pathology and General Parasitology from Cornell University in Ithaca, NY. Dr. Shinholster was actively involved in the University by serving as a member or Chairman for over 20 years on the Athletic Committee and 20 years as Faculty Athletic Representative to the MIAA and the NCAA.

He was a member of Phi Chi Graduate Chapter of Omega Phi Fraternity in Concord, NC where he served as a regular member, KRS and Basileus. In 2004, he was named to the Special Livingstone College Hall of Fame for his athleticism which included leading ground gainer in 1955 and 1956 being named all EIAC slectee for football, being named Most Outstanding Athlete of the year in 1956 and serving as head basketball coach for the historical 1964-1965 team at Livinsgton.

While he was an avid golfer and lifetime member of the USGA, he still found time to serve the community as a member of the Sunrise Optimist Club and board member and Vice President of Adult Basic Literacy Educator.

Dr. Shinholster was the father of the late Ensign Jonathan L. Shinholster (decease) and is survived by his wife, Phoebe Rosetta Shinholster of Salisbury, NC; daughter, Celeste A. Shinholster of Stamford, CT; mother, Alberta Shinholster of Concord, NC; brother, James "Bill" Clawson, of Concord, NC; a aunt, nieces, nephews, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, cousins and friends.

Funeral services Friday, July 20, 2007 12:30 pm at Varrick Auditorim, Livingstone College, Salisbury, NC with the Reverend James E. Milton, II, Officiating; visitation 11:30 am to time of service; interment U. S. National Cemetery, Brenner Ave., Salisbury, NC with Military Rites by the U. S. National Guard.
