Hattie Witherspoon Obituary

Hattie Elizabeth Anthony-Witherspoon was born on August 31, 1936, in Charlotte, North Carolina to Thom Anthony and Inez Leada Glenn-Anthony. “Ma” Hattie passed away on Monday, April 22, 2024, at the Greens at Cabarrus Living Center after valiantly battling congestive heart failure. Known as “Hat” by her parents, Hattie attended Isabella Wyche Elementary School, West Charlotte High School, and graduated from the Second Ward Accelerated Night School. Hattie met and fell deeply in love with Elijah Abraham Witherspoon, a South Carolina country boy who got incredibly lucky and found himself an elegant beauty queen in the “Queen City”. After giving in to his persistent begging, Hattie married Elijah Witherspoon on November 20, 1960, and chose to keep him around for 49 years until his death they did part. Hattie was a loving and devoted mother to six children, Rodney E. Anthony, Marilyn D. Black, Abraham H. Witherspoon (deceased), Jonathan Witherspoon (deceased), David L. Witherspoon, and Aaron D. Witherspoon. Hattie distinguished herself with a relentless work ethic in every area of her life and was consistently employed in the nursing, retail, and industrial industries until she retired in 2001. Hattie accepted Christ at an early age and was a consummate ambassador for heaven who talked the talk, but more importantly, lived the talk. Hattie was a devout and active member of the Ephesus Seventh Day Adventist Church in Salisbury, NC where she glorified God with a lifetime of service as a choir member, an usher, song-service leader, Sabbath School Superintendent, and Treasurer. Hattie would often remind her family members to seek God at every turn, and that if they made it to heaven and did not see her there, then they had unfortunately ended up in the wrong place! Hattie was the moral compass and spiritual center of her family who loved unconditionally and without limits. Hattie was quite a jokester and brought sunshine and the unconditional love of Jesus everywhere she went. Hattie was preceded in death by her newborn son, Jonathan (1964), her husband, Elijah (2009), and her son, Abraham (2013). Hattie lived a God-fearing life and leaves indelible marks of fond and happy memories to be cherished by her baby brother, Larry O’Neal Anthony (Yvette) of Charlotte, NC, her sisters, Sylvia Herring of Charlotte and Lucille Hayward of Kentucky, her first-born son, Rodney Elroy Anthony of Charlotte, NC, her precious daughter, Marilyn Denise Anderson (Samuel) of Charlotte, NC, her middle child, David Lamar Witherspoon of Raleigh, NC, her baby boy, Aaron Dmitri Witherspoon of Salisbury, NC, and a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, church family, in-laws, and friends. Well done, Hattie! You have fought the good fight; You have finished the race; You have kept the faith. Take your well-earned rest and claim the victory! To God Be All the Glory, For Great Things he has done with the life of Hattie Elizabeth Anthony-Witherspoon.
