Hodge Lewis Evans, 90, of Salisbury, North Carolina, passed at Presbyterian Hospital, Charlotte, NC on October 9, 2024, following a period of declining health.
He was born September 13, 1934, in Salisbury to the late Robert and Lillie Mae Hargrave Evans.
Evans was a product of Salisbury City Schools graduating from J.C. Price High School in 1953. He completed two years of study at Livingstone College.
At the early age of thirteen, he began his route as a paper carrier for the Salisbury Post. He retired from the Post after working over 50 years in the mailroom and in other areas.
As a lifelong member of the Church Street/Trinity Presbyterian Church, he served as a trustee, usher, and a parking attendant. He was actively involved in The J.P. Johnson Memorial Society and Senior Morning Out at both Trinity and Rufty Holmes. He took pride in his church membership and made significant gifts to show his support.
Evans will be remembered as one who loved his family and church. He also took pride in his knowledge of Salisbury’s history and especially the East Side and the Downtown area.
Although he walked rapidly, he always had time to stop and discuss politics, newspaper articles, his proud voting record, and as he would say, “the world today.” He was a “regular” at Bill’s Pastry in his early days but after it closed he ate daily at Richard’s Barbecue knowing well the owner, the cooks, waitresses, and frequent customers as it was a place where he enjoyed the menu, people and conversations.
It can be said that Hodge Lewis Evans’ personality made people he met feel connected, appreciated, and accepted. He enriched the lives of many and was a family treasure and blessing.
When asked, “Hodge, how are you doing today?” he always answered, “I am doing the best I can.”
