Mr. John William Howard, age 79 of 501 Welder Street, East Spencer, died Wednesday, June 28, 2007 at the W. G. "Bill" Hefner VA Medical Center, Salisbury. He was born on December 8, 1927, in Iredell County to the late Elizabeth Lackey Howard. He graduated from Morningside High School, Statesville, and did further studies in the U.S. Air Force. He retired as a S/MSgt. in the Air Force, where he earned many medals, letters, recognitions and certificates.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Philomena Howard.

Suvivors are sisters Virginia C. Ramsey, of East Spencer, and Gloria E. Chambers of Statesville; nephews, Charles E. Ramsey Jr., and Derek L. Ramsey both of East Spencer; Cedrick L. Ramsey of Salsibury, and Robert L. Howard Jr., of Cleveland, NC; a niece, Deborah H. Beatty of Charlotte; and a sister-in-law, M. Frances Howard of Cleveland. He was also survived by members of his extended family, Willie Lazenby, Cooleemee; Jean Lazenby, Charlotte; M. Drucilla Summers, Teawanna C. Williams, Phillip A. Chambers, James Davidson and Katherine Davidson all of Statesville; and Annie D. Holmes of Elwood.

Services were held on Tuesday, July 3, 2007 at the U.S. National Cemetery, Salisbury, with Bishop Randy Minor officiating. Military rites were by the U.S. Air Force Honor Guard.

Hairston Funeral Home, Inc., was in charge of the service.
