Rev. Phyllis P. Jones, Esq.
It is with deep sorrow and sadness that we announce the passing of our dear friend, Rev. Phyllis Priscilla Jones, Esq.. Rev. Jones passed on, Thursday, October 10, 2024 at Cardinal Care LLC of Hope Mills, NC.
Born in Salisbury, North Carolina as the third child of the late Arthur and Sarah Jones, Phyllis Jones was educated in the public schools of Rowan County and graduated for North Rowan High School. She attended Duke University, Durham, North Carolina as a Herbert Lehman Scholar and earned a Bachelor of Arts of Public Policy. She earned the Master of Public Policy and Juris Doctor degrees from the University of Michigan where she was an Earl Warren Scholar, recipient of the Writing and Advocacy Merit Certificate, and President of the Black Law Student Alliance. She earned the Master of Divinity degree, summa cum laude, from Hood Theological Seminary in Salisbury, NC.
She taught legal writing as an Associate Professor at North Carolina Central University Law School. She was admitted to practice before the courts of North Carolina and the United States District Court for the Middle and Eastern Districts of North Carolina, the District of Maryland, and the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit and the United States Supreme Court. She served the following organizations: Board of directors of the Welfare Reform Liaison Project, Greensboro, NC; Board of Directors of the Small Business Incubators, Rockingham County Community College, Wentworth, NC; Board of Trustees of the Women’s Center, Reidsville, NC; Board of Directors of the Rockingham County Teen Health Clinics; Board of Trustees of the Children’s Home in Winston-Salem, NC.
In 1992, Phyllis was licensed to preach by the Zion Baptist Church in Reidsville, NC and was ordained through the Rowan Baptist Association in 1994. Her love of ministry and desire to serve as a pastor led her to assume full-time duties as Senior Pastor of Madison Circuit (Hayes Chapel. St. Stephens, and Withers Chapel) of the Western North Carolina Conference of the United Methodist Church in Madison, NC. She later served as pastor of Berry Temple United Methodist Church in Asheville, NC. Her special interests in Christian ministry included women, youth, and Christian education.
After relocating to Fayetteville, NC, she united with the Lewis Chapel Missionary Baptist Church where she joined the ministerial staff and served as the pastor and coordinator of the NOW Generation worship experience. She also served as co-site pastor of Lewis Chapel Missionary Baptist Church West Campus.
She worked for Legal Aid of North Carolina as Staff Attorney in Greensboro, NC, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission as a Trial Attorney in Baltimore, MD, and the Rockingham County Department of Social Services as Staff Attorney in Wentworth, NC. She also served as Research Assistant for the North Carolina Court of Appeals and the Supreme Court of North Carolina. Most recently, she served as Assistant County Attorney for Cumberland County, from which she retired.
She was an active member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by a brother, Ferrens Thomas Jones; sisters, Bessie Jones, and JoAnn Jones, and her beautiful niece, Rae Danielle,
Many cherished memories shall never be forgotten by her brother, Arthur Ray Jones (Connie), Salisbury; and Arhonya Brooks ( Dwayne), Hope Mills, NC, whom she fondly referred to as her daughter; her god-granddaughters in love, Bailey and Malaysia; Hope Mills, NC, and Jessica Alexander (Linda), Reidsville, NC, as well as many extended family members, friends, co-workers and the caring staff at Cardinal Care LLC of Hope Mills.
Service: October 16, 2024 at Jerusalem Baptist Church. Visitation: 11:00-11:30. Funeral begins promptly at 11:30. Rev. Dr. David L. Bracken, Pastor/Eulogist. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
