Walter “Walt” Sifford, 66, passed away on Sunday, December 7th, at Atrium Health Cabarrus. Born April 3rd, 1959, in Rowan County, he was the beloved son of the late Ruth May Sifford.
Walt was a proud graduate of East Rowan High School, where he excelled as a three-sport athlete in football, basketball, and track. His exceptional skill earned him All-County honors in football in 1973 and 1974. He later attended Florida A&M University and Livingstone College, continuing his athletic career as a defensive tackle and linebacker. In 1976, he received the Varsity “L” athletic letter from Livingstone College in recognition of his contributions to the football program.
A hardworking and determined man, Walt built a successful career in construction. He was the owner of W.G. Sifford Construction, a business he poured his heart into while subcontracting underground utility work for AT&T. Earlier in his career, he served as a lineman crew foreman for multiple construction companies and worked for a time as a gravedigger at Hairston Funeral Home. Walt was known throughout his community as someone who would lend a helping hand—no matter how big or small the need.
Walt was a faithful member of Antioch Baptist Church in Granite Quarry, NC. He also spent time involved with the IBPOEW Pride of Salisbury Elks Lodge #1774. His love for fellowship, engines, and the open road led him to join both the Bad Boys Motorcycle Club and the Old Chevy Corvette Car Club in Rowan County.
Walt leaves to cherish his loving memory two sons, Travis Sifford(Jennifer) and Quentin Sifford; a niece who was like a daughter, Caprecia Sifford(Tyren); Niece (Kristina Stout) two brothers, Dwight Sifford and Chester Polk; and a favorite uncle, Willie B. Sifford(Mary Frances). He is also survived by his cherished grandchildren: Aaliyah Sifford, Hendrix Sifford, Landon Sifford, Karagan Sifford, Emmalyn Sifford, and Tatum Sifford, all of whom brought him immense joy.
Walt will be remembered for his strong work ethic, generous spirit, humor, and unwavering commitment to those around him. His legacy lives on in the family he loved deeply and the many lives he touched.
A graveside service will be held on, Saturday, December 13, 2025 at 1:00 p.m. at Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery. Rev. Rickey Johnson, pastor, eulogist.
