Mr. Rodney Odell ("Scoop") Wood, age 57 of Short St., Salisbury, passed away on Friday, October 23, 2015 at Select Specialty Hospital within Forsyth Hospital in Winston-Salem, NC.  Rodney was borth on November 19, 1957 to Willie Jean Massey Wood Lowery and the late Lam Wood, Jr.  Rodney was a 1976 graduate of Salisbury High School and was recruited by several universities, including Florida A&M, Winston-Salem State, and Applachian State to name a few; but decided to give back here at home in Salisbury, where he attended Livingstone College.  Immediately upon leaving Livingstone College, Rodney got busy helping the youth of Rowan county realize their athletic potential by coaching and mentoring young boys and girls in Sports.  He was a coach for the Salisbury Parks and Recreation Department and the AAU Basketball Team.

Rodney was very active in community affairs through the Crusader's Men's Club, who for many years advocated for several programs such as mentoring, school supply give away, and a clothing collection program for several families who had been burned out of homes.  He along with the Crusaders won the Salisbury Boys to Men Service Award and was very instrumental in starting a youth basketball league.

Rodney was a member of the Elks Club and an avid golfer.  He was also a lifelong member of Gethsemane Missionary Baptist Church.

Those left to cherish his memory in addition to his mother, Willie Jean Massey Wood Lowery, are his son, Timothy Darnell Blackwell, seven grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren, his sister, Dorothy Jean Wood-Webb (Timothy), his brother, Richard Lam Wood (Lovie), his step-sisters, Batina Lowery Hooper (Kenny) and Sarah Lowery.  He is also survived by a special aunt, Eva Deloris Massey Pulliam (Bill), a host of cousins, aunts, uncles, other relatives and friends.

Funeral service will be held at Gethsemane Missionary Baptist Church with pastor, Rev. Dr. Clary L. Phelps, eulogist, on Thursday, October 29, 2015 at 7:00 p.m, with visitation from 6:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m.  Burial will be on, Friday, October 30, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. in Oakwood Cemetery.
