Alvin Adams

December 18, 1917 ~ November 17, 2016 (age 98) 98 Years Old

Alvin Adams Alvin Adams was born Dec. 8, 1917, to the late William Adams and Dollie Adams in Bartow, Ga. He was one of seven siblings and was peacefully called home to be with our Lord and Savior on Thursday, Nov. 17, 2016 surrounded by the love of his family. Alvin was the loving husband of Mattie Wilson Adams for over 60 years and held many titles and roles in his life. After growing up as the son of sharecroppers, Alvin made his way in life in a variety of occupations including a boxer, mover, building superintendent, gas station manager, dry cleaner, tailor and ultimately retiring as a highway supervisor from the Incorporated Village of Freeport.

He was ordained as a Deacon by Bishop J. Raymond Mackey of the Tabernacle of Joy Baptist Church and later served at Mount Zion Church under the late Reverend Arthur L. Mackey, both in Roosevelt, New York.

In 1986, he and his family relocated to Salisbury, North Carolina where  he joined Mount Zion Baptist Church under the directions of the late Rev. Dr. Samuel R. Johnson, Jr.  Later he joined New Zion Baptist Church, under the leadership of Reverend Paul Jones, Sr.  He was faithrully involved in the church serving as Deacon, Sunday School teacher and was instrumental in helping the church build its new sanctuary..  Alvin was a committed member of the Rowan & Davie Counties Deacons Alliance, Inc.  He served the sick and shut in and volunteered with the Rowan Helping Ministries serving the homeless.

Alvin was a devoted man of God and family.  Anyone who knew him, knew how much he loved his family.  Next to God and family was his love for fishing and gardening.  He grew more than we could consumer and received joy in sharing with family, friends and neighbors.

Alvin lived a long and wonderful life.  He was known as Dad to many, as well as Grandpa, Grandpa Al, Gramps, PopPop, Uncle Man, Uncle Al, Deacon Al, Mr. A, loving father, friend, uncle.

Alvin leaves to cherish his memory, his loving wife, Mattie; sons, Alvin Adams, Jr. (Edna); Robert Adams (Ivy); daughters, Mary Thomas (John), Madonna Burgess (Chester), Robin Augustin (Tony), Linda Brigmon, Cynthia Grissett, Subreana Adams, and Justina Ezeji (Cletus); a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, friends and caretakers. He is predeceased by his older sister, Louise Morris, who passed just two months ago at the age of 101; and his children, Cassandra Bridgers (Riddick), Calvin J. Outlaw (Pat), Beverly Hawkins (Tony) and Alma Adams. Visitation: 12 p.m., followed by funeral at 1 p.m., Saturday, November 26, 2016 at New Zion Baptist Church, 2785 Dunns Mountain Road, Salisbury, with Rev. Patrick Jones, pastor/eulogist. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Hairston Funeral Home, Inc., is serving the Adams.
